《咆哮山莊》的男主角希茲克利夫是個孤兒，幼年時即被咆嘯山莊的主人恩蕭先生好心收養，但恩蕭先生自己有個兒子漢德黎與一個女兒凱瑟琳，而希茲克利夫與凱瑟琳年紀相仿，兩人自小即有情愫，同時希茲克利夫也受恩蕭先生的疼愛，為此使漢德黎極為不滿，所以希茲克利夫不只常受漢德黎的欺負，同時，他與凱瑟琳的戀情也受阻撓，尤其安蕭先生死後，凱瑟琳便被逼嫁給艾德加，而希茲克利夫也被降級為僕人，因此希茲克利夫受了很大的傷害而離開咆嘯山莊，當凱瑟琳與艾德加結婚後過了一段平靜的生活後，希茲克利夫再度出現，此時又引起凱瑟琳心中無比的痛若，最後她生了愛德加的女兒然後死去，而當希茲克利夫得知凱瑟琳的死訊，他幾近崩潰，並決定復仇。
