Jacob and his mother tend one of the best vegetable and herb stalls in the marketplace. But one day an old, strange looking woman pays them a visit, and she doesn’t like most of what she sees. Poor stuff!” she grumbles. Young Jacob tells her to keep her long, ugly nose out of their vegetables. When she finally decides on a bag of cabbages, poor Jacob must carry them home for her. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s walked into the home of a wicked fairy who doesn’t like being insulted. The outlandish spell she casts on him will change his life forever. Dwarf Nose is classic fairy tale by Wilhelm Hauff, rich with unforgettable characters and suspenseful turns. Jacob’s arduous tasks and twists of fate will have readers of all ages on the edges of their seats. Lisbeth Zwerger’s fanciful illustrations evoke all the magic, mystery and drama of this German classic, while Anthea Bell’s fresh translation breathes new life into a story that deserves a wider audience.

Wilhelm Hauff was an extraordinarily prolific writer. The freshness and originality of his talent, his inventiveness, and his genial humor have won him a high place among the southern German prose writers of the early nineteenth century. Lisbeth Zwerger is one of the most highly regarded illustrators of children's books and was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1990 to recognize her lifetime contribution to children's literature. She is the author and illustrator of numerous books including The Pied Piper of Hamelin and The Little Mermaid.
