The analysis of policies with a view to changing them is the subject of this book. Written by an expert on policy research, it shows ways of presenting alternatives to policy-makers with the emphasis on communicating the value and applicability of the research that backs up the policy options. The book was written with advanced undergraduates and graduates in mind, to help them conduct research which will help resolve social problems. It attempts to overcome the problem of knowledge-makers who build knowledge which interests them alone, and of policy-makers who ignore knowledge which is relevant and directly available.Using a pragmatic approach that deals with real world issues, the author presents the processes involved in a step-by-step manner, emphasizing the ways in which researchers can get their message across."Ann Majchrzak's book is essential reading as it has the potential to help sociologists think about the ways in which their studies may be designed, conducted and reported so that they will be relevant to policy makers."-- Network, No 33, October 1985
