In the two-volume set, Fa analyzes the most definitive art forms of each period in China’s history, tracing a consistent, though not constant, Chinese metaphysical worldview from time-specific works of visual art, architecture, dance and music, calligraphy, and literature. He reveals how sovereigns manipulated art to legitimize rule, men of letters coped with the vicissitudes of life through aesthetic outlets, and the folk art of commoners unwittingly influenced the artistic mainstream. This first volume begins with the philosophical origins of Chinese art in prehistoric times; accounts for the imposing style of Qin and Han art works, including the Terracotta Army and mausoleum art of the Tomb of General Huo Qubing; and ends with the symbolic Tang dynasty, which Fa characterizes as the pinnacle of Chinese poetry and a cultural turning point in Chinese history.
